Kamoto Copper Company -- KCC -- is a copper and cobalt producer in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, jointly owned by Glencore (70%), Gécamines (25%) and the DRC State (5%).
Located in Kolwezi, in the province of Lualaba, our portfolio of assets includes:
- three open pit mines: KOV,T17 and Mashamba East
- one underground mine: KTO
- the Kamoto concentrator: KTC
- the Luilu refinery
Our history
The word Kamoto from which the company derives part of its name, means "small fire" in Swahili.
- 2007: Glencore acquires an interest, via Nikanor, later merged with Katanga Mining Limited (listed on TSX) – 8.52%
- 2009: Glencore acquires majority control – 74.44% (via KML shares)
- 2014: KCC becomes a Public Limited Company according to OHADA (Organization for the Harmonisation of Business Law in Africa)
- 2015: KCC’s refinery and concentrator facilities enter care and maintenance to enable construction of the Whole Ore Leach (WOL) expansion project
- 2017: Commissioning of the WOL project which marked a key milestone for KCC's modernization efforts, enabling us to process lower-grade ore and maximize resource utilization.
- 2017: Production of first copper cathode post care and maintenance
- 2020: KCC completes construction of acid plant, reducing reliance on external suppliers and improving overall process efficiency.
- 2024: Glencore finalises transfer of 5% of its KCC shareholding to the DRC state as required by the 2018 Mining Code.
- 2025: KCC is recognised for responsible production practices by the Copper Mark, becoming one of the first copper producers in Africa to be successfully awarded the Copper Mark against the new Risk Readiness Assessment (RRA) 3.0 standard.
- 2025: Construction of High-Gac processing circuit to augment copper production.
